Program
Green Cities 2021 is a monthly virtual lecture program organized by CSU that takes place on the first Thursday of each month. The series is focused on achievements in sustainability and resilience worldwide. This event is a special addition to the series in celebration of Archtober (AIANY) and Urban October (UN Habitat)
Speakers
Harrison Fraker received his MFA in Architecture from Princeton and Cambridge Universities. His teaching, practice, and research span 50+ years; first at Princeton (1968-84), then as chair and founding dean at the University of Minnesota (1984 95), and finally as the 5th Dean of CED at UC Berkeley (1996-2019). He has received ten major design awards, the 2014 The Topaz Medallion – the highest award for excellence in architectural education and his Oakland EcoBlock was chosen as a Top Ten Transformative Project by Scientific American 2018. His most recent book is MINDING THE CITY, Field Notes on the Poetics of Sustainable Public Space, ORO Editions (March 2021).
Doug Kelbaugh, FAIA, received a B.A. Magna cum Laude and an M.Arch degree from Princeton University, and then led Kelbaugh + Lee from 1977 to 1985, an architecture firm that won 15 design awards and competitions. Architecture Chair at the University of Washington,and then Dean the University of Michigan, then V.P. of Design and Planning for a development company in Dubai, working on major projects in the Middle East, SE Asia, Europe and Africa. He was awarded the 2016 Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education, the highest award in the field. He’s authored or edited numerous books, most recently THE URBAN FIX: Resilient Cities in the War against Climate Change, Heat Islands and Overpopulation.

Educated at the Cooper Union, M.Arch and M.Arch in Urban Design, Harvard GSD.

AIA Members need to go to the aia.org website and enter the following information in the Continuing Education section to be found under “Transcript” For the Green Cities 2021 hourlong virtual program on Thursday, October 21, sponsored by the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization, the speakers Harrison Fraker and Douglas Kelbaugh discuss their approach to making cities that are increasingly more resilient, sustainable, and equitable. They do so by unpacking their respective books that dealt with long-term observations that resulted in thought leadership in this arena.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the purpose and goals of a timely investigation into components of a viable future urbanization.
- Discuss in detail the ways and means of addressing critical issues of environmental policy and design as related to the design of the responsive city including bit mitigation and adaptation strategies.
- Illustrate with diagrams and case studies how, we can fix the city region and city itself by reducing pollution, managing waste, adding shade, adding appropriate spaces in the public realm.
- Identify how different groups, areas of expertise, and vested interests can come together in a collaborative format to address the challenges and rise to the opportunities of climate change
