CSU is a proud member of the Habitat Professional Forum and is pleased to share the following about the recently released HPF Roadmap for Recovery, developed in response to sustainable urban and territorial challenges throughout the world. I was pleased to contribute on CSU’s behalf.

Roadmap to Recovery Overview

The Habitat Professionals Forum (HPF) of UN-Habitat unveiled its Post-Covid Roadmap to Recovery during the World Urban Forum in Katowice, Poland, this June 2022. As an affiliation of international built- and natural-world associations, representing more than 15 million urban and regional professionals, the combined expertise of the HPF is central to promoting and achieving sustainable urban and territorial developments throughout the world.

The HPF Post-Covid Roadmap mobilizes its large international network by providing 22 propositions to change how we plan and manage our cities, regions, and countries. This high-level guide delivers fit-for-purpose approaches for all built and natural world professional organizations to shift away from “business as usual” approaches to a new paradigm for urban growth and development.

HPF members (L to R) Eric Huybrechts (co-chair), Mona Rady (chair), Lance Brown, and Nicholas Kuhl unveil the HPF Roadmap to Recovery via a press conference at the World Urban Forum 11 in Katowice.

HPF unveiled and presented the Roadmap through a variety of events and activities during the World Urban Forum. These included a formal adoption by the HPF at its annual general meeting, a Sustainable Development Goals plenary session hosted by Plan Malaysia, a formal United Nations press conference, and part of the UN-Habitat’s Roundtable events. Through the HPF Roundtable, the Roadmap was written into the official summary of the World Urban Forum’s proceedings, and the HPF is leveraging this momentum to begin implementing the Roadmap in earnest.

A central intervention of the Roadmap is a refreshed commitment to the Roadmap’s shared vision by all HPF member organizations. As part of the immediate aftermath of the World Urban Forum, the HPF has reached out to its built-world member organizations, seeking for members to formally endorse and commit to implementing the Roadmap’s 22 propositions as appropriate for each organization.

The 22 propositions are divided into two parts, those propositions that are general and applicable to all members and those that are thematic and relevant to specific areas of expertise. Through this recommitment, the Roadmap seeks to harness the full potential of the cross-disciplinary community of HPF to provide professional support ranging from direct engagement with local communities to mobilizing international support where the need is greatest.

Moving forward, in 2023, the HPF remains energized by its successes to date in engaging member associations in this recommitment and looks forward to expanding the impact of the Roadmap through collaborative dialogue and ongoing implementation of the 22 propositions.
